Health and Safety Policy for Carpet Cleaning E15
This Health and Safety policy sets out how our carpet cleaning operations in the E15 area are planned, managed and monitored to protect clients, members of the public, contractors and our team. We are committed to safe, efficient and environmentally responsible cleaning practices across all residential and commercial properties we service.
Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objectives are to prevent injury and ill health, to minimise risks arising from our work activities, and to comply with all applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards. We aim to continually improve our performance through regular review of procedures, staff feedback and client input.
Management Responsibilities
Company management holds overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining this policy. This includes:
Ensuring risk assessments are carried out and kept up to date for all carpet, upholstery and related cleaning tasks. Providing appropriate equipment, cleaning products, protective clothing and training. Monitoring working practices to confirm that safe systems of work are followed. Investigating incidents, near misses and health and safety concerns, and implementing corrective actions where required.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees and operatives have a duty to safeguard their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. Staff are required to:
Follow all training, instructions and safe working procedures. Use personal protective equipment correctly and report any defects. Report hazards, unsafe conditions and incidents immediately to management. Co operate fully with any health and safety investigations or audits. Refrain from reckless behaviour or misuse of equipment.
Training and Competence
We ensure all staff are trained and competent for their roles before working unsupervised at client sites. Training includes:
Safe use and maintenance of carpet cleaning machinery and tools. Safe handling, dilution and disposal of cleaning chemicals. Manual handling techniques to prevent strain and injury. Awareness of site specific risks, access routes and emergency arrangements. Infection control and hygiene measures, including in high traffic and sensitive environments.
Refresher training is provided periodically and whenever new equipment, products or procedures are introduced.
Risk Assessment and Method Statements
Formal risk assessments are completed for our typical carpet cleaning tasks and are reviewed regularly. Site specific assessments are carried out where required, for example in premises with vulnerable occupants, restricted access or unusual flooring types.
Safe working methods are documented in method statements and communicated to staff. These cover preparation of work areas, machine setup, chemical dilution, drying procedures and post cleaning checks.
Chemical Safety and COSHH
We use professional carpet and upholstery cleaning products selected for both effectiveness and safety. All chemicals are stored, transported, used and disposed of in accordance with manufacturer instructions and applicable regulations.
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health assessments are maintained for relevant products. Key controls include:
Using the minimum effective concentration and avoiding unnecessary spraying. Ensuring adequate ventilation during and after cleaning. Providing and wearing appropriate gloves, eye protection and other PPE. Clearly labelling containers and keeping chemicals out of reach of children and pets. Cleaning up spillages immediately and disposing of waste responsibly.
Personal Protective Equipment
We provide suitable personal protective equipment according to task and risk assessment. This may include protective gloves, eye protection, non slip footwear, masks or respirators where appropriate, and protective clothing.
Staff are trained in the correct use, removal, cleaning and storage of PPE. Damaged or worn items are replaced without delay.
Equipment Safety and Maintenance
All carpet cleaning machines, vacuums and tools are inspected and maintained at regular intervals to ensure safe and reliable operation. Electrical equipment is checked before use and removed from service if any defects are found.
Cables are routed to minimise trip hazards, and warning signs are used in areas where floors may be damp during or after cleaning. Only trained personnel are permitted to operate powered equipment.
Site Access, Public Safety and Signage
When working at client properties in and around E15, we take care to protect building occupants and visitors. Measures include:
Using barriers or warning signs to indicate work areas and wet floors. Keeping access routes as clear as reasonably practicable. Avoiding obstruction of fire exits, stairs and emergency routes. Managing noise and disruption with consideration for neighbours and other users of the premises.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
To reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, staff are trained in lifting techniques and are encouraged to use mechanical aids or team lifts where practical. Heavy machines and containers are moved using appropriate methods, avoiding unnecessary carrying over long distances or up stairs whenever feasible.
Infection Control and Hygiene
Particular care is taken when cleaning carpets in properties where there may be bodily fluids, pet accidents or contamination. Suitable cleaning agents and disinfectants are used, and waste is bagged and disposed of in a controlled manner.
Hands are washed or sanitised before eating, drinking or leaving the work site, and any cuts or abrasions are covered with waterproof dressings.
Emergency Procedures and First Aid
Staff are briefed on emergency arrangements at each site, including fire exits and assembly points where information is provided by the client. Where possible, at least one operative present will have basic first aid awareness.
In the event of an accident, incident or near miss, the situation is made safe, appropriate assistance is sought and the details are reported to management without delay.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety policy is monitored on an ongoing basis to ensure it remains effective and relevant to our carpet cleaning operations in the E15 area. We review the policy at regular intervals, and sooner if there are significant changes in legislation, industry guidance, equipment, products or work practices.
We encourage feedback from staff and clients to help improve safety standards, reduce risk and deliver a professional, responsible service.
Policy Communication
This policy is made available to all employees and is communicated as part of induction and refresher training. It may be provided to clients on request to demonstrate our commitment to safe carpet cleaning services in and around E15.
